#YABATECH Gist: Who has encountered the infamous Yabatech beggar?

A few days ago we came across a report of this lad who goes around on campus begging for money from students. There is no harm in seeking financial help from people, but when insincerity creeps in, it becomes annoying and irritating.

From what was gathered, this unidentified beggar has a routine background story he tells each time he goes around begging. Those who have encountered him in the past claim that the first thing he asks; is if you are a student of Yabatech or a specific department in other cases. He then goes ahead to tell a story of how he came all the way from Akute to make enquiries and how he is stranded, not having enough cash to transport himself back home.

Here are some of the reactions from fellow Yabatech students

Dupe Afeiye: It is actually very annoying. Dere was 1 in faculty of Art wen I was a student,he begs with style,he says "sister, 50naira or 20naira pls". This was 07/08, in 2010,a Frnd younger sis complained abt d same guy. Can u imagine,he is been doing dis 4 abt 2-3yrs.

Esohe Gift Aivinhenyor: There was one that use to come to chapel then to ask for twenty naira. That even knows my name and the office I held in LVCU. I later stopped giving him though cos I realised he was using it to smoke.

Dapo Adigun: I don't understand you're not blinded or amputated in any form, you just wake up in the morning and you're going around begging people for money... There is a look i give them now, they don't even look twice before they move on.

Stanley Agbakansi: Somehow, I think a number of these guys understand our psychology as Africans and hence have a way to appeal to our sentiment. One thing I know however is that 'wealth gotten by deceit cannot last', that is if they are wealthy at all. They think they are making gain but they only enslave themselves more, crying wolves when there is none. When they will really need the help, theirs would be like that of 'Kalu, the Shepherd boy' we read about in 'mastering english' back in primary school.
