On Thursday, the House of Representatives warned universities against admitting students who intend to study courses that have not been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
According to Leadership reports, the House also resolved that any Vice-Chancellor of a university found to be admitting students for non-approved courses should be sanctioned by the NUC.
A motion which was tagged, “Call on Nigerian Universities to Stop the practice of admitting Students into Courses not Approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC)” and sponsored by Hon. Samuel Onuigbo was adopted yesterday.
Onuigbo mentioned the practice by Universities of admitting students when they know the courses have not been accredited in their institution. This has made it possible for hundreds of prospective graduates to be stuck without degrees, leading to depression and bleak future.
He revealed that as many as 104 courses out of all courses being offered in about 140 federal, state and private universities in the country, are not accredited by the NUC.
Consequently, the House Committee on Tertiary Education and Services was mandated to carry on inventory of all universities to ascertain approved or accredited, and non-accredited courses and establish why they are not accredited with a view to find a solution.
