Vice chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe, has disclosed that the university has the capacity to admit over one million new students annually. He stated that this has been made possible through its open and distance learning education.
Tenebe made this revelation at the unveiling of the university’s new goodwill ambassador, Ahmed Is. Tenebe said Nigeria records an excess of 1million students yearly from prospective university admission seekers due to the inability of the existing 124 universities to admit above the current 500,000 carrying capacity.
According to him, NOUN now has presence and learning points in all the 36 states in Nigeria, plus the Federal capital.
He added that getting educated through open and distance learning prepares graduates for work with less supervision in the future.
He added that countries like China, India, Indonesia, United Kingdom and the United States of America are using this means to educate their millions of citizens.
While urging Nigerians to take advantage of the democratised system of learning at the university to increase literacy level in the country as NOUN will have a study centre in each of the 774 LGAs in the next 15 years.
